Undergraduate Program

Nursing

Welcome to Nursing

Students in nursing at HU study chemistry, psychology, anatomy and physiology and work in hospitals, nursing homes, doctors’ offices and government health departments.

A degree in nursing equips you with the skills to assess clinical scenarios, navigate patient interactions and work successfully in a variety of health care settings. Graduates with a nursing degree will be ready to provide comprehensive service in a health care or research setting, and make a lasting impact on patients and their families, physicians and other health professionals they interact with.

Some Kinds of Nurses

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Registered Nurse (RN)

Emergency Room Registered Nurse

Surgical Assistant Registered Nurse

Students in a nursing major can expect to explore the crossover between theoretical and practical learning.

Many RNs choose to explore additional training or graduate-level work. Some nurses pursue a master’s degree in nursing to develop expertise, take on leadership roles or move into advanced practice; and some earn a doctor of nursing practice for an in-depth analysis of nursing as a means to improve patient care.

Advanced practice roles include nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, administrators, educators and researchers.

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing at HU is conducted over four years. Below is a typical first year list of subjects you can expect to cover:

  • College Algebra
  • Introductory Biology
  • Introduction to Professional Nursing
  • Theoretical Foundation of Professional Nursing
  • Health and Disease Management
