From Our Early Days to Now

About Us

Harris' History

We are a private, niche university, boasting a diverse student base reaching across all corners of the world. As a fully licensed and registered university, HU is at the forefront in delivering quality and affordable education to the people of tomorrow.

Harris University was founded in 1962 by Dr. Edgar William Henry Hine, a British MD born in London, UK.

In later years, Dr. Hine made frequent trips to Latin America to practice medicine in third world countries and help those in need. By assisting the less fortunate, Dr. Hine realized that the best way to help young adults was by giving them access to education through programs that could reach communities where there were no opportunities to study. To achieve this, Dr. Hine started a long-distance correspondence educational program.

Harris University was established for public benefit and as a non-profit venture. Throughout our great history, HU has offered access to a wide range of academic opportunities, bringing education within the reach of those that otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity.

The University has pioneered change in the education industry, recognizing those that truly deserve a degree to move forward in their fields.

Not only does Harris University provide you the practical and theoretical skills that are necessary to transition seamlessly into the workforce upon your graduation, but we also make sure that you will have a good sense of social well-being so that you make the transition smoothly.

The first programs given were technical skills that helped communities and families with their immediate needs. The University started as a school that taught simple careers such as Public Health, Accounting, Agricultural Best Practices, and Community Planning. This idea was shared by Dr. Hine with several colleagues and with time they were able to setup a satellite office in Florida and from there were physically closer to key partners that could help achieve their goals.

His wife and life companion Vera was the original inspiration to Dr. Hine given that she came from a low-income family in Latin America who could not afford a formal education. Throughout their time together, Vera helped out with his medical practice but also his vision to give opportunities to everyone to study.

Dr. Hine passed away on January 9, 1999. His legacy continues today by those who share his vision to help others grow through education.

Vera passed away on April 28th, 2008 but the Hines’ dedication to education continues today.

Harris University has an office in Florida to coordinate all the students’ needs and logistics as well as the needs of the professors. All documents can be validated by the State Department of the United States of America.

Our Philosophy

Harris University was born with 2 main purposes:

  1. Academic Excellence
  2. Respect and a Fair-Go for All

Powerful Alumni

From your time as a student to your post-graduate experience as an alumni, HU’s support and networking opportunities continue.

Respect for All and Equal Rights

Harris University is against any form of discrimination by race, nationality, gender, or social status.

From Classroom to Online Learning

One of the most important reasons HU was founded was the need to offer opportunities to students around the world to have access to an education no matter where the student was located and still give them the ability to obtain their professional degree at a lesser cost.

Classes originally began through mail and phone calls between the student and professor. The student would study through a syllabus and textbook self-studying with full coursework and testing designed for each course.

With the boom of the Internet and personal computers, we understood it was time to set all coursework into an eLearning format available to everyone who sought personal and professional improvement.

eLearning Grad's Worldwide

Harris University’s best presentation and testimony to education are the thousands of students who have studied and graduated with us throughout the years and are now successfully working in different fields throughout the world. Those students who have become professionals and earned their degree in what was originally thought of as a non-traditional way are the reason why this academic institution was founded and they are our best product and reason why we still offer this type of coursework today.

International Association of Accredited Online Schools and Institutions

Unfortunately, some people still have the impression that studying online is not as good as a former traditional study program. This is why several institutions and universities with online schools have joined in a network to create the International Association of Accredited Online Schools and Institutions.

This association was constituted in the year 2001 under legal serial number 3-002-374713. Upon joining this association, it gives prestige to your school or institute and will back up any program after the prospective student has gone through the admission process. The school or institution will prove the seriousness of its programs and validity in each country. To be included as part of this association, the school must be legally constituted and operating under the legal laws of the country of origin as well as having the study programs validated, notarized and certified by Hague Convention.
