Doctorate Degree

The Highest Level of Academic Degree Awarded

A doctorate degree typically signifies that the holder has completed advanced study and research in a particular field of study and has made a significant original contribution to the knowledge or understanding of that field.

There are several different types of doctorate degrees, each with their own specific focus and requirements. Some of the most common types of doctorate degrees include:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): This is a research-based degree that is awarded in a wide range of fields, including the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. Students pursuing a PhD typically conduct original research and write a thesis or dissertation based on their findings.
  • Doctor of Business Administration (DBA): Designed for experienced business professionals, executives, managers, entrepreneurs, and consultants who have significant work experience in the business field and want to further develop their skills, knowledge and expertise. It is offered on a full-time or part-time basis and typically takes 3-5 years to complete.
  • Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) or Doctor of the Science of Law (DSL): This is a research degree for students of law, equivalent to the PhD in other fields.
  • Doctor of Education (EdD) or Doctor of Pedagogy (DPed): This degree is focused on educational research and practice and is often awarded to individuals interested in working in educational leadership, administration or policy.
  • Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) or Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT): These professional degrees awarded to individuals who have completed a program of study in their respective fields and passed a licensure exam.

These are just a few examples of the many different types of doctorate degrees available at Harris University.

Requirements

The specific requirements to complete a doctorate degree can vary depending on the field of study, and an applicants educational and work history. However, there are some common requirements in earning a doctorate degree.

  1. Coursework: Our doctorate programs include coursework that is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in their field of study. The coursework typically covers both theoretical and practical aspects of the subject matter, and may include seminars, lectures, and laboratory or fieldwork.
  2. Comprehensive Exams: Before students can begin working on their thesis or dissertation, they are required to pass comprehensive exams. These exams are designed to test students’ knowledge of their field of study, and may include written or oral components.
  3. Research: The core of the doctorate program is original research, which is typically conducted under the supervision of a faculty advisor or mentor. The research may take the form of a thesis or dissertation, and should make a significant original contribution to the field of study.
  4. Thesis/Dissertation Defense: After completing the research, students are required to write a thesis or dissertation that summarizes their findings and explains the significance of their research. In some programs, students will need to defend their thesis or dissertation before a committee of faculty members.
  5. Residency: Some programs may also require a certain amount of in-person or virtual residency, where the student is expected to attend classes, colloquia, workshops or seminars.

Some fields of study may also require additional requirements such as clinical hours, practicum, teaching assistantships, or internships to complete the degree.
